The Maharashtrian Nath — Gold and Pearl Nose Ring

नथ | A complete guide for Marathi brides
By Rajesh Londe · 3rd-generation jeweller, BIS-certified valuer · Updated May 2026

Of all the jewellery a Maharashtrian bride wears, nothing draws the eye like the Nath. A sweeping curve of gold and pearls, beginning at the left nostril and finishing near the ear, it has been the visual signature of Marathi brides since the 17th century. It is not jewellery you forget — it is jewellery that announces a bride's arrival.

For 37 years, Londe Jewellers has crafted Maharashtrian Naths in Nagpur. This guide walks through the four main Nath traditions, what makes pearls authentic, what to expect on price, and how to choose the right Nath for your wedding day or daily-festive wardrobe.

What makes the Maharashtrian Nath different

Most Indian nose ornaments are small studs or rings. The Maharashtrian Nath is something else entirely. It is large — often 2 to 4 inches across. It is curved — following the arc from nostril to upper cheek. It is layered — multiple rows of natural pearls anchored on a gold framework, sometimes with a centerpiece gemstone or a tiny gold peacock. It is, in every sense, a statement.

"The Nath is the first thing the wedding photographer captures. And the first thing the bride's mother cries looking at."

The Nath dates back to the Peshwa courts of the 17th and 18th centuries. Royal women of the Marathi court wore Naths so large they had to be supported by a delicate gold chain hooked behind the ear. Over time, the design democratised, but the soul stayed the same: a Marathi bride is incomplete without her Nath.

The four main Nath traditions

1. Brahmani Nath (the classic Marathi bride)

The most iconic version. Two to three curving rows of natural pearls anchored on a delicate 22K gold framework, with a central red gemstone (often a ruby or red spinel) and small green stones (emeralds or peridots) flanking it. Sweeping curve. Worn by Maharashtrian Brahmin brides for centuries. Average weight: 12g to 20g.

2. Peshwai Nath (royal heritage)

Heavier, more dramatic, more goldwork. Three to four rows of pearls, often with a peacock or kalash motif at centre. Originally worn by Marathi nobility. Modern brides who want maximum impact choose this. Average weight: 18g to 35g.

3. Marwadi-Maharashtrian Fusion Nath

Common in Vidarbha and northern Maharashtra (Nagpur, Akola, Amravati) where Marathi and Marwadi families have intermarried for centuries. Combines the curving Marathi structure with Marwadi-style heavier gold detailing and sometimes uncut polki diamonds instead of pearls. Average weight: 15g to 25g.

4. Modern Minimal Nath (daily-festive)

Smaller, lighter, contemporary. Single row of pearls or a delicate gold-only curve. Designed for women who want the visual signature of a Nath without the bridal weight. Worn for Gudi Padwa, Karva Chauth, family functions. Average weight: 5g to 10g.

How much does a Maharashtrian Nath cost?

Pricing depends on weight, pearl quality, gemstone quality, and design intricacy. At the May 2026 Nagpur rate at Londe Jewellers:

Pearls — the single biggest price variable

Most Naths look similar from across a room. The difference between a Rs 1,00,000 Nath and a Rs 4,00,000 Nath of the same design is almost entirely the pearls.

At Londe Jewellers, every Nath pearl source is documented on the invoice — natural / premium cultured / standard cultured. We do not mix grades silently. Ask your bridal consultant to show pearls under good light before deciding.

For brides without nose piercing

The Marathi tradition assumed a pierced left nostril. Modern brides who do not have a piercing can still wear an authentic-looking Nath using a clip-on design:

If you decide to get a piercing for the wedding, do it 4 to 6 weeks in advance. The piercing site heals enough to wear a 15g-25g Nath comfortably.

How to choose your Nath

  1. Match face proportion. Larger Naths suit longer faces and longer noses. Smaller, more delicate Naths suit shorter, rounder faces. The Londe bridal consultation room has a full-length mirror and good lighting to try.
  2. Coordinate with the saree and Mundavalya. If your saree colour is heavy red or maroon, a ruby-centred Brahmani Nath complements perfectly. If green or yellow, consider emerald-flanked designs. Your Mundavalya (forehead jewellery) should not compete with the Nath — pick one as the dominant piece.
  3. Test comfort. Wear the chosen Nath for 30 minutes in the showroom. Adjust the support hook. A Nath worn uncomfortably will be the wedding memory you do not want.
  4. Verify hallmark and pearl certification. Every gold piece BIS hallmarked. Natural Basra pearls should come with a pearl-grade certificate (Londe issues one for every Nath sold).
