No piece of jewellery is more quietly significant in a Maharashtrian woman's daily wear than the bichiya. Unlike the mangalsutra or bangles, which are visible and central, the silver toe ring sits low, just above the ground, and yet carries the same weight of tradition. In Maharashtra, a married woman's toe ring is as standard as the mangalsutra — and because silver stays on the foot continuously, the quality of the metal matters more than almost any other piece she owns.

At ZIA Silver Jewellery — our 925 sterling silver brand with stores in Dharampeth and Pratap Nagar — we stock bichuwa across the full design range: plain bands for women who want minimal and everyday, ornate floral motifs for bridal or puja occasions, and modern single-toe adjustable pieces for younger buyers. This guide covers the design vocabulary, explains why 925 sterling silver is the right metal for toe rings, and gives you honest weight and price benchmarks for Nagpur in 2026.

Why Silver for Toe Rings, Not Gold?

The tradition of wearing silver on the feet rather than gold is deeply embedded in Indian culture and has a practical basis that most families have followed for generations without necessarily knowing why.

Gold is considered a sacred metal associated with Lakshmi and the deities. Wearing it below the waist — and especially on the feet, which touch the ground — was considered disrespectful in traditional Hindu custom. Silver, by contrast, is associated with the moon, water, and Shiva, and is considered appropriate for the feet. Many families follow this rule instinctively even today: gold above the waist, silver on the feet.

Beyond tradition, silver is also physically better suited to continuous foot wear. It is harder wearing than 22K gold, takes daily contact with sandals and floors without scratching or deforming, and does not cause allergic reactions when alloyed to 925 purity. The ankle and toe bear much more movement friction than the wrist or neck — silver can absorb that wear without the structural thinning that would happen with 22K gold over the same period.

925 sterling silver specifically — 92.5% pure silver alloyed with 7.5% copper for hardness — is the right grade for toe rings. Pure 999 silver is too soft. German silver (white metal with no actual silver content) tarnishes within days and is not BIS hallmarkable. Read our full guide on what 925 sterling silver means and how to verify it.

Types of Bichiya: Traditional Designs

1. Plain Band Bichiya (Sada Bichuwa)

The simplest and most practical design — a smooth, round band ring worn on the second toe of each foot. Comes in three widths: 2mm (minimal), 3mm (standard), and 4mm (traditional weight). The standard pair weighs 3 to 5 grams in silver. Because it has no surface motif, it is resistant to tarnish build-up and easy to clean. Price range for a pair in 925 sterling: Rs 599 to Rs 1,199. Most Nagpur women who want a permanent everyday bichuwa choose this design.

2. Floral Motif Bichiya (Phool Bichuwa)

A band with an embossed or pressed floral pattern — typically a small lotus, marigold, or chameli flower repeated across the band face. Slightly heavier than plain bands (4 to 7 grams per pair) because the wider flat face accommodates the motif. The extra surface area means slightly more polishing care needed to keep the recessed motifs bright. Price range: Rs 899 to Rs 2,199 per pair. Popular for bridal bichuwa sets — especially as the sister-in-law's gift (nandisun) in Maharashtrian weddings.

3. Lakshmi / Ganesh Motif Bichiya

A broader band (5 to 6mm) carrying a relief-carved Lakshmi or Ganesha motif on the top face. The religious motif makes this design specifically requested for gifting during Diwali, Gruhapravesh, and Ganesh Chaturthi. Weight 5 to 8 grams per pair. Price range: Rs 1,299 to Rs 2,499. These tend to be the most gifted bichuwa design across Nagpur families for festive occasions.

4. Twisted / Spiral Band Bichiya

Two or three thin silver wires twisted together to form the band. The twist gives visual texture without additional weight — pairs typically weigh only 2 to 4 grams. Popular with younger women who want something less plain than a smooth band but lighter than a motif design. Price range: Rs 699 to Rs 1,499 per pair. These are the most comfortable for continuous wear because the twisted structure is slightly flexible.

5. Adjustable Loop Bichiya (Chhalla)

An open-ended design rather than a full closed band. The ends are finished (not sharp) and the ring opens fractionally to fit any toe width without sizing. Especially common as a gifting design — no ring sizing needed, fits most adults. Weight 2 to 4 grams per pair. Price range Rs 799 to Rs 1,299. The tradeoff: the open end can catch on fabric edges, so not ideal for heavy daily wear.

Modern Bichiya Designs

6. Single Statement Bichiya

Worn on one toe only rather than paired. Often broader (6 to 8mm) with a decorative element — a small zircon set in the centre, a fine engraved geometric pattern, or an asymmetric open shape. Weight 4 to 7 grams each. Price range: Rs 1,299 to Rs 3,499. Specifically popular with younger women who see the toe ring as a fashion accessory rather than a marital symbol, and with women who have returned from a period of not wearing bichuwa and want to re-adopt the tradition with a contemporary design.

7. Crystal-Set or Meenakari Bichiya

A band with colour accents — small white or coloured crystal stones set flush into the band, or blue/green/red meenakari enamel panels. The colour makes these designs highly photographable and a popular choice for sangeet and mehendi event accessories. Stones are typically cubic zirconia (not diamonds — these are fashion-grade accessories). Weight 4 to 6 grams per pair. Price range: Rs 1,499 to Rs 2,999. The coloured stones need more care — avoid soaking in water for extended periods.

How to Choose the Right Size

Toe rings are sized differently from finger rings. Standard Indian bichuwa sizes run from size 3 (very narrow toe) through size 8 (wide toe), with size 5 and 6 fitting most adult women. Adjustable designs skip this step entirely. For closed-band designs, the safest approach is to visit the store and try before buying. Most women find their second toe (the longest toe next to the big toe) takes size 5 to 6. If buying online or as a gift, go adjustable.

A correctly fitted bichiya sits snugly enough that it does not slide off when you walk barefoot, but loosely enough that you can slide it on over the toe knuckle without forcing. Tight enough to need soap to remove means a size too small — that will restrict circulation over daily wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Indian tradition, gold is a sacred metal associated with deities and is considered disrespectful to wear below the waist. Silver is associated with the moon and Shiva, making it the appropriate metal for feet. This custom is widely followed across Maharashtra and most of India regardless of religious denomination.

925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, BIS hallmarkable, anti-tarnish with proper care, and lasts decades. German silver (also called white metal) contains zero actual silver — it is a nickel zinc copper alloy that turns greenish within weeks, cannot be hallmarked, and can cause allergic reactions. Always ask for the BIS hallmark stamp.

Soak in warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap for 5 minutes. Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and air dry. For tarnished pieces, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently with a cloth, then rinsed, restores shine. Avoid toothpaste, as the abrasives scratch the surface.

Short showers are fine — 925 silver is water resistant. Prolonged soaking in chlorinated pools or the sea will accelerate tarnish and over time can affect the finish. Remove before swimming in a pool.

Plain band pairs start at Rs 599. Floral and motif designs range Rs 899 to Rs 2,499. Modern statement single pieces range Rs 1,299 to Rs 3,499. All prices are for BIS hallmarked 925 sterling silver. Prices move slightly with the silver rate.

Yes. Adjustable loop designs (chhalla style) are available at both ZIA Silver stores and do not require ring sizing. These are the recommended option for gifting when you are unsure of the recipient's toe size.
