What Is 22 Carat Gold (916 Gold)?
22 carat gold contains 91.6% pure gold (22 parts out of 24) and 8.4% alloy metals like copper, silver and zinc. The alloy provides the strength needed for wearable jewellery. Pure 24K gold is too soft for jewellery, so 22K is the Indian standard for rings, mangalsutras, bangles, necklaces, earrings and bridal sets.
The 916 hallmark is the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification that confirms the 91.6% purity. Every gold jewellery piece sold in India since April 2023 must carry this hallmark by law, alongside a HUID (Hallmarking Unique Identification Number) you can verify online at bis.gov.in.
22K vs 24K Gold Rate Comparison
