Gold Mangalsutra Vati Weight and Price Guide Nagpur 2026

Vati Mangalsutra. A complete weight and price guide for Maharashtrian brides.
By Rajesh Londe. 3rd generation jeweller, BIS certified valuer. Updated June 2026.

The Vati mangalsutra is the only mangalsutra style with a bowl shaped gold pendant. That single design choice, the curved Vati pendant at the centre, is the visual signature of the Maharashtrian married woman across Vidarbha, Marathwada, Western Maharashtra and Konkan. No other regional mangalsutra style in India uses the Vati shape.

For 37 years Londe Jewellers Gold and Diamonds has crafted Vati mangalsutras for Marathi families in Nagpur. This guide walks through what a Vati actually is, how heavy it should be, what it costs at June 2026 rates, the Nagpuri hollow bead karigari that makes our city famous, and how to choose the right Vati for your wedding day or daily wear.

What is the Vati and where does it come from

Vati is the Marathi word for a small bowl, the kind used in every Maharashtrian kitchen for serving dahi or chutney. The mangalsutra Vati borrows that exact shape, a shallow curved bowl in 22K gold, either as a single Vati pendant at the centre of the necklace or as twin Vatis hanging side by side.

The Vati tradition dates back at least 400 years in the Marathi heartland. Religious explanations vary, some texts say the bowl shape symbolises the bride holding her husband's well being like food in a sacred vessel, others say the curved form represents the moon and prosperity. What is undisputed is the design's regional specificity. Walk into any Marathi household in Nagpur, Pune, Kolhapur or Solapur and the senior married woman is wearing a Vati. Walk into a Gujarati or South Indian household and you will never see one.

"A Marathi woman without her Vati is not a Marathi woman. The Vati is the first thing the husband touches in the saptapadi and the last thing the family removes at the end of life."

How heavy should a Vati mangalsutra be

Vati weight depends on three choices. Bridal grandeur vs daily wearability. Solid Vati vs hollow Vati construction. Single Vati vs twin Vati design. Here is the practical weight ladder Nagpur brides typically choose from.

Vati styleConstructionGold weightDaily wearable
Daily lightweight VatiSingle hollow Vati, 16 inch chain12g to 18gYes, designed for everyday
Brahmani classic VatiSingle solid or hollow Vati, 18 inch chain18g to 25gYes, also bridal capable
Twin Vati MaharashtrianTwin Vati, 18 to 20 inch chain22g to 30gWedding and festivals
Heavy bridal VatiTwin solid Vati with engraving, 20 inch chain28g to 35gBridal showpiece
Peshwai royal VatiTwin solid Vati with gemstone, 22 inch chain35g to 45g plusWedding day only

Most Nagpur brides we serve at Londe Jewellers choose one bridal Vati in the 22g to 28g range plus one daily Vati in the 14g to 17g range. The bridal Vati is locked in the family bank locker for festivals and weddings. The daily Vati is worn under the saree blouse or kurta neckline at all times.

The Londe difference is itemised transparency, no hidden charges, no melting loss fee on family exchange.

Nagpuri hollow Vati karigari, the regional specialty

If you are a Vidarbha bride buying your first Vati, the most important regional design choice is hollow vs solid Vati construction. Nagpur is famous across Maharashtra for hollow Vati karigari.

A solid Vati pendant of 25g looks like a 25g pendant. A hollow Vati pendant of 12g looks like a 25g pendant. The hollow technique is done by Sitabuldi and Itwari karigars who hand hammer thin 22K gold sheet over a wooden bowl form, then solder the two halves together to create a sealed hollow Vati. From outside the design is identical to a solid Vati. Inside, the Vati is empty, which halves the gold weight at the same visual presence.

Hollow Vati is not a budget compromise. It is a regional craft Nagpur is known for. The Marathi Brahmin community in Vidarbha has favoured hollow Vati for over a century because it lets a daughter in law wear her bridal Vati daily without the weight pulling on her neck across decades. Families pass down hollow Vatis across three or four generations without losing weight or shape.

The trade off, hollow Vati cannot be melted down for full gold value if you ever want to exchange it. The hollow construction means some gold is lost in the recasting process, typically 3% to 5%. At Londe Jewellers we disclose this on the invoice for every hollow Vati. Most families do not exchange Vatis because they are passed down, but it is worth knowing.

Brahmani Vati vs Peshwai Vati, the two main traditions

Brahmani Vati (the everyday Marathi tradition)

The classic Marathi Brahmin Vati. Single Vati pendant or twin Vati, 18g to 25g total weight, plain bowl with no engraving or with minimal floral border, 16 inch or 18 inch black bead chain. Designed to be worn daily for the entire length of marriage. Most Maharashtrian women in Nagpur, Pune and Kolhapur wear a Brahmani Vati under their saree blouse every day. Price range at June 2026 rates, Rs 2,50,000 to Rs 4,80,000 depending on weight and karigari.

Peshwai Vati (the royal heritage tradition)

The heavier, more dramatic Vati associated with the Peshwa courts of 17th and 18th century Pune. Twin Vati pendants, 30g to 45g plus combined, intricate engraved goldwork on the bowl exterior, often a small ruby or red spinel set at the centre of each Vati, 20 to 24 inch black bead chain with intermediate gold beads. Bridal showpiece only, not daily wearable due to weight. Most Vidarbha families who can afford a Peshwai Vati keep it in the family bank locker and wear it only at weddings, Gudi Padwa, and major family functions. Price range at June 2026 rates, Rs 5,80,000 to Rs 12,00,000 plus depending on weight, engraving and gemstone quality.

The black beads, what most jewellers do not tell you

The black beads on a Vati mangalsutra are not gold. They are not gold plated. They are not blackened gold. They are authentic black glass beads, called manjaras or kale mani in Marathi. The tradition specifically requires non gold black beads because the black colour represents protection against the evil eye, while the gold Vati represents prosperity. Mixing the two would dilute the symbolism.

Where the difference shows up, in the quality of the black glass. Cheap mangalsutras across Nagpur use industrial glass beads that fade to grey within 3 to 5 years and chip easily. Authentic Marathi mangalsutras use food grade Czech glass or Indian Firozabad temple grade glass which lasts decades without fading or chipping. At Londe Jewellers every Vati mangalsutra is strung with Czech glass black beads on a fine 22K gold wire, with optional 22K gold accent beads between the black beads for variation.

How to choose your Vati at Londe Jewellers Nagpur

  1. Match your daily routine first. If you will wear this Vati under your blouse every day for the next 40 years, choose hollow construction in the 15g to 22g range. Heavier Vatis pull on the neck after a decade.
  2. Bridal Vati is a separate decision. Most Marathi brides at Londe choose two Vatis on the same wedding shopping trip, one heavy bridal Vati (25g to 35g, twin design) for the wedding day and a daily Vati (15g to 18g, hollow) for the rest of life.
  3. Try the chain length on. 16 inch sits at the collarbone. 18 inch sits between the collarbone and the chest. 20 inch hangs lower on the chest. Try all three at the Sitabuldi bridal lounge before deciding.
  4. Match the Vati to the Nath weight. If you have a heavy Brahmani Nath of 18g to 25g, balance with a Brahmani Vati of 22g to 28g. A heavy Peshwai Nath needs a Peshwai Vati. Keep the visual weight of the head and neck pieces in proportion.
  5. Ask about the karigar. Londe Vatis are crafted at our in house workshop in Itwari by Maharashtrian karigars who only make Vati and Thushi work. Other Nagpur shops outsource Vati making to Mumbai or Surat. Ask any shop you visit who actually crafts their Vati pieces.
  6. Bring family heirloom for exchange. If your family has an older Vati or any 22K gold jewellery, bring it to any Londe showroom. We test purity with an XRF gun in front of you, weigh, and credit 100% of the gold value at the day's rate. Zero exchange charges, no melting loss fee.
