Karigari notes from the Sitabuldi workshop
The Sitabuldi karigari workshop has made Marathi bridal sets since 1989 across three generations. A few notes on technique that change the price by 30 percent without changing how the piece looks:
Hollow karigari for Tode and Patli reduces gold weight by 40 percent while keeping the piece looking solid. Strong enough for one bride to wear on the wedding day plus reception. Not suitable for daily wear or for hand down to next generation. See the Nagpuri Hollow Karigari Vidarbha Craft guide.
Ghotya pattern Patli with the pierced cut work is the Vidarbha signature. The same weight in plain finish looks much smaller than the same weight in ghotya. Always pick ghotya for the bride. Detailed in the Patlya Bangles Weight Price guide.
Mundavalya pearls source matters. South Sea pearls cost Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per pearl, Hyderabad cultured pearls Rs 80 to Rs 200 per pearl. A 100 pearl Mundavalya can have a Rs 60,000 price gap based purely on pearl source. Ask before ordering.
Kolhapuri Saaj motif count changes the price. Full 21 motif Saaj is the Maharashtrian heritage standard. Modern Saaj with 11 or 13 motifs costs 40 percent less and looks similar at a glance. Full coverage in the Kolhapuri Saaj Nagpur guide.
Vati Mangalsutra weight choice light 10 gram lets the bride wear daily after marriage. Heavy 25 gram plus is wedding day only. Most Nagpur brides order both a heavy Vati for the phere and a light daily wear Vati on the same order with shared design. Detailed pricing in the Gold Mangalsutra Vati Weight Price guide.
When each piece enters the wedding ceremony
The order of wearing matters. The Marathi Vidarbha ceremony has a precise sequence:
Haldi morning: Mundavalya tied across the forehead. This piece stays on for the next 12 hours.
Sangeet evening: Nath added to nose. Bugadi plus Kudi plus Kaap to ears.
Wedding morning getting ready: Veni or Aboli into the hair bun. Anguthi onto fingers. Bilwar Choodi with glass bangles onto wrists.
Saat phere arrival: Kolhapuri Saaj first, Mohanmal second, Thushi third onto the neck in that exact order. Tode pair plus Patli pair onto wrists above the Bilwar.
Saat phere ritual: Vati Mangalsutra tied by the groom around the bride neck. This is the ritual centre of the ceremony.
Reception that evening: Kambar Patta added at the waist over the saree.
First night ritual: Painjan onto ankles, Bichiya onto second toe of both feet. Both pieces are silver and worn for the first time.
